Starting with a pair of leather uppers and wooden lasts, this practical course will take you through the 200+ traditional steps to create a pair of handsewn, men’s derby shoes. (Please note that you will not be making the patterns or the uppers). The course is for a maximum of eight students and is taught by founders of carréducker, Deborah Carré and James Ducker.
The course covers:
Selecting and preparing the leather for the soles, welts etc.
Hand lasting, skiving and sharpening knives
Making threads
Hand welting and sole stitching
Edge trimming and setting
Building heels and finishing
Course fees:
Three-week shoemaking course £1170
The fee includes a set of tools for the student to keep - lasting pliers, awls & handles, tape measure and knife.
Please note that bespoke lasts can also be ordered at a cost of £300 per pair.
(You will need to supply measurements and a drawing of your feet – taken from our website - by 1 December 2007 for the Spring course and by 1 May 2008 for the Summer courses).
