Derby Shoe Pattern Making Videos

The three videos in the Derby shoe pattern making series walk you at a gentle pace through the details of:

Module 1: Taping the last, marking the guide points and drawing on the design; duration: 37 minutes

Module 2: Taking the design from the last and making the standard; duration: 13 mins

Module 3: Making the pattern pieces from the standard; duration 18 mins

The aim is that you watch and p[ractice pattern making from the videos before joining Fiona for the face-to-face class, so that you can familiarise yourself with the practice.

Derby Boot Pattern Making Class

Following on from the video series this two-day in-person class will enhance the practical skills that you have learned from the videos as you make a Derby boot pattern, providing a strong foundation for future pattern making. Well-fitting patterns are essential for a good fit, so the opportunity to pick up tips and techniques from a bespoke professional are invaluable. Through demonstration and guidance, you will tape the last, draw on the boot design, make the boot standard and make the pattern pieces for a Derby boot.

Handsewn Shoe Making Video – Taking Foot Measurements – Download

We’re bringing everything that we know about handsewn shoe making online, some 30 years experience, so that wherever you are in the world you can access the very best training, tips and techniques.

This video covers how we take measurements of the feet to send to our last maker. It is important that you use the same methods as the company that will be making your lasts. We work with Springline Ltd of Northampton to have our lasts made and so we use their methods to take our measurements for customer and student feet. That way we know that the lasts will be as good a fit as possible from the outset.

There are many different ways to take measurements from pressure pads to foot scanners but the trusty pencil, tape measure and paper has served us well over the years; so this is how we work. We made this film to help you to take measurements yourself, either of your own feet or for your customers.

What you will need at home

a tape measure
a pencil
a foam impression box (see thumbnails)
the feet of a willing helper

The shoe making process is filmed over several weeks and edited into bite-sized modules that take you through the 200+ steps in making a pair of handsewn shoes, starting with a pair of uppers, lasts and a pack of ‘rough stuff’ leather; some 4 hours of tuition.

You can buy the course in full or cherry pick which module you would like, so whether you are a complete beginner or a shoemaker looking to finesse your techniques or top up your knowledge there is something here for you.

COURSE CONTENTS

Our detailed step-by-step videos take you through the entire 200+ steps in the English handsewn shoe making process to make a pair of leather soled and heels shoes using traditional hand tools and heritage craft techniques including hand lasting and hand welting.

MODULE 1: PREPARATION (39 minutes)

How to prepare the components for handsewn shoe making – the stiffeners, toe puffs, insoles (including the holdfast), welts and threads

MODULE 2: LASTING (34 minutes)

How to fit the stiffeners and toe puffs; and pull over and secure the uppers to make the shoes tightly shaped to the last

MODULE 3: WELTING (31 minutes)

How to hand stitch a leather welt around the shoes

MODULE 4: SOLING (45 minutes)

How to prepare and attach a leather shank, cork filler and a leather sole, stitched by hand

MODULE 5: HEEL BUILDING (52 minutes)

How to build leather heels with layers of leather, nails and paste

MODULE 6: FINISHING I, II & III (51, 15 & 9 minutes)

How to finish the soles and heels – waxed and polished; pull the lasts and sock the shoes
