Butler Vintage Leather Stitching Chisel / Pricking Iron x 4 Point
Rare vintage stitching chisel (to punch the holes) by renowned British workshop A. Butler & Son (London) from the 1930s.
The chisel has 4 points and makes fine, angled holes (see photo). These are traditionally used for marking the stitch holes before using a diamond awl to make the holes, however these have been refined by the maker and are sharp enough to punch the holes without a diamond awl. (The holes pictured were created with a single rubber hammer strike in a 2mm piece of veg tan leather).
It is stamped A. Butler and the number 15; it is also stamped W. Howes, perhaps the maker’s name as the names also appears on the Thomas Adam chisel we are selling..
This is one of two chisels with the other carrying 20 points.
